Thoughts on the KF Cheonggyecheon Music Festival

Held for three days at Cheonggyecheon Hanbit Park, the 2015 KF Cheonggyecheon Music Festival exposed me to genres I was quite unfamiliar with, as opposed to the usual K-Pop or hip-hop. Musicians from countries such as Mexico, Luxembourg, and Bulgaria displayed a diverse range of cultural influences. The Saturday night I attended was a new and interesting experience. Hailing from Luxembourg, Pascal Schumacher and his band featured the vibraphone, which is rare in Korea, and other instruments to produce original musical sensations.
It was all the more fascinating because I hadn’t been exposed to live jazz that much. Up next was Bulgarian vocalist Miryan Kostadinov, who lit up the arena with his unique voice, despite performing alone on the stage.
It was only a few hours, but listening to musicians from around the world helped me cultivate a personal interest of their music and native countries. I hope the KF continues to offer these kinds of opportunities for new cultural experiences.
