Korean Heritage Room Opens at University of Pittsburgh

With sponsorship support from the KF, the Korean Heritage Room at the University of Pittsburgh will hold an opening ceremony to celebrate the new facility on November 15, 2015. The Korean Heritage Room is part of the university’s Cathedral of Learning, a local landmark that is known for its collection of 29 Nationality Rooms, which are designed to celebrate the cultures of various countries around the world. Modeled after Korea’s Myeongnyundang lecture hall of Seonggyungwan, a prestigious educational institute of the Joseon Dynasty era, the Korean Heritage Room was constructed by master Korean craftsmen with lumber and materials from Korea. Traditional Korean furniture and artwork are displayed in the room’s interior. The Korean Heritage Room will allow Pitt students to familiarize themselves with Korea’s cultural and educational background, along with helping to promote Korean culture to the Cathedral of Learning’s more than 30,000 annual visitors. The university’s administrators, overseas Koreans in the region, and other individuals who helped to make the heritage room possible have been invited to attend the ceremony, which will feature a live cultural performance that reflects the colorfulness of Korea and its culture.
