FIELD TRIP TO GANGHWADO ISLAND MUDFLATS

To round out another month, on June 27, volunteers of the Korean Culture Class and the program’s international participants visited Ganghwado Island to frolic on the mudflats, learn Korean-style archery, feed animals, and indulge in other cultural activities. Early in the morning, participants gathered at Seoul City Hall and hopped on a bus to Ganghwado Island. While abiding by the guide’s safety rules, everyone waded out into the island’s famous mudflats. Non-Koreans, unfamiliar with the sinking sensation of each step, seemed scared at first, but it wasn’t long before everybody dove in and started hurling mud at each other. Some applied the mud to their faces for cosmetic purposes, while others just wrestled around in the muck. It was a meaningful outing and a chance for foreign residents to get a firsthand experience of the mudflats of Korea.
