Meeting the World in Korea: Azerbaijan and
India Edition

Are you familiar with the Central Asian country of Azerbaijan? How much do you really know about India? On a hot summer day in July, children at the Trust Local Children’s Center in Ansan, Gyeonggi Province, which is well-known for its multicultural residents, spent some time with foreign volunteers from these two rather unfamiliar countries. First up was Rigina Bakhshaliyev, a volunteer from Azerbaijan, which means the “land of fire,” where petroleum was first discovered. Ms. Bakhshaliyev introduced her home country’s unique culture, which is a blend of Islamic and European cultural influences, and continued her interesting presentation with an introduction of traditional games, including arrow throw and egg fight. Next, Suresh Kumar, a volunteer from India, delivered an engaging discussion about India, touching on such topics as the country’s climate and its marriage culture. Mr. Kumar also gave the students a brief yoga demonstration. The children’s attempts to mimic the yoga positions had everyone laughing at each other.
