Korean Holiday Activity

Students of the Korea Culture Class were given a chance to experience Korea’s traditional holidays. The foreigners participating in the holiday program visited a market to buy ingredients and then went to a hanok guesthouse in Jongno to prepare holiday food. They also had a chance to look over and try on various articles of hanbok, Korea’s traditional attire, which varies with the person’s gender and social status. Captivated by the beauty of hanbok, the participants listened with rapt attention to an explanation of how the clothing should be worn and its significance. Students also had the rare privilege of learning how the table is arranged for a traditional charye memorial service. The participants were astonished to learn that all of the individual items on the table have their own significance and symbolism. For half a day, the foreign participants and Korean volunteers enjoyed heartwarming experiences, just like a regular family spending the holiday together.
